Week 2 Assignment.. All done
Posted on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 by Rory McIlvenny in
I'm on day three of quitting caffeine and boy oh boy was I not expecting this! I started my assignment yesterday and I couldn't complete it because I was dumber than a box of rocks. Maybe, and that is a big maybe, I am feeling a little quicker today, aside from the chronic fatigue! I managed to muster up 200% focus to get done with this assignment. How embarrassing!
Of the things that I learned about plagiarism, the tough-y is the fact that it isn't just as simple as copying someone else's work. There are a lot of rules involved, and those rules differ in format, whether the format is MLA or APA etc. I have in the recent past complained that one teacher wants me to write a report in APA format when just one quarter before I learned MLA. I didn't realize it was common place for muliple papers that are assigned for me to complete to be different formats. Knowing this now, I see that I didn't have it bad at all, and I can expect this situation to be a bit more hairy in the future! I hadn't heard of style guides before now. My new found awareness of them eases my nerves knowing that I don't necessarily have to memorize every format I come across. I would like to look inside of one of these to see if the rules of citing are reiterated therein. I learned yesterday that if any wording is taken from a source, no mater if is common knowledge or not, if must be cited. This seems simple but I would never have thought that just a few mundane words that the source used as maybe, an adjective, would need to be cited. I also learned that swapping words and rearranging paragraphs is still plagiarism even if it no longer reads the the likeness as the original. I have taken notes on all of these rules and I will use them to guide me as I write. I will add to my notes as I learn more about plagiarism, as I know that there is always more to be learned. Any time I include information in my writing, I will consider where it came from and include proper citing if necessary before publishing.
Assignment:
1. No, this is a personal experience. No citation is needed.
2. This passage is debatable, therefore it should be cited
3. This is a statistic and all statistics need to be cited
4. This was taken from the original text. A few words were dropped, while a few were added
or swapped/rearranged. Without citing the source, this is plagiarism.
5.These are direct quotes from "Letter from the Birmingham Jail." Although they are common knowledge
phrases, they are from the letter and should be cited. This is cited correctly given that a full citation to the source is in the bibliography.
6. This is a quote with the author and work included in the text. This is cited correctly given that a full citation to the source is in the bibliography.
7. This is a personal experience and does not need to be cited.
8. This is common knowledge and can be found in many sources. This does not need to be cited.

Pretty good for no caffeine, why oh why did you give it up?
Yes, plagiarism can seem a moving target depending on the style, I always consult a style guide to make sure. There are great resources on the OWL page as well as on our library home page under citing source(right above the link for IRIS tutorials)that cover all the style manuals and variations.
It seems like the tutorials were enlightening and a good reminder of what you already know about plagiarism. You seem to have a fairly good grasp on how/when to cite as demonstrated by the exercise.
